Ha ha ha ha writing whole unneeded scenes to support a darling sentence ha ha ha I HAVE THOSE.

Thanks for the encouraging insight. I'm beginning to rack up some experience now in the realm of cutting, and it's incredibly satisfying to do the tailoring--to cut out a piece, seam the edges together, reshape things and make it look good and fit.To beat the metaphor a bit, since I do have a background in sewing and tailoring, there's a sort of "whole cloth" quality to the first draft, and it seems really pretty, but it's not a garment yet. You really do have to kind of do violence to it with a big pair of scissors to make it into something.

SHEG is going to be great for facing the Middle. I've looked and looked at my draft, and it's my fellow Sheggers who have given me the clues I need to proceed in shaping it.

What's scary is how much things change in the process! My characters, their motivations, and in a couple of cases their very existences, are changing as I fit the middle to the Tent Poles, and I'm not yet experienced enough to know whether the story is slipping its leash altogether, or just finding its true form. I guess the only way to find out is to keep going, and have faith that the original idea is still leading me forward.
