A blue day in a blue state
15/4/05 12:53Today The Oregonian's front-page headline is "Court Annuls Gay Marriages."
The Oregon Supreme Court on Thursday voided the marriages of 3,000 same-sex couples and left the issue of civil unions to an uncertain fate in the 2005 Legislature.
The marriage licenses were, to say the least, controversial. We all knew they were fragile. Still, friends of mine were married in those few amazing, heady days, and there's absolutely no guidance in any etiquette book anywhere for what to say or do today.
"Sorry you guys got annulled"?
"It was cool while it lasted"?
"Some of us still believe in your marriage"?
"What the fuck business was it of the state's in the first place!?!"?
On a more reasoned second look, perhaps just flowers and an attractive card letting them know I'm thinking of them...
