No forgiveness required--my siblings and I were lucky not to have been exposed to that set of grandparents, and there were very good reasons why my father moved 3000 and then 6000 miles away from them.
Of course, that grandfather was also terribly abused (basically abandoned as a child--given away because of poverty, and God knows what else), so the challenge is to feel compassion--to forgive--while not losing sight of very real damage in one's own life that needs repair...and not becoming too attached to that damage as one's identity.
