So, you're stuck in a very high-priced and yet not-that-nice hotel room near Heathrow waiting to begin your UK adventure, and it's 8:00 p.m. by the local clock but noon by your inner clock and you haven't slept--not realy--in well over 30 hours.

What do you do?

You pay many many dollars for the "wireless internet service throughout the hotel" that was the reason you chose the damn place to begin with thinking it was actually included in the price of the room (silly you), then log on to LJ for the first time in weeks and weeks, and say hi to everyone.

Tomorrow my good pal [livejournal.com profile] roseambr and I get a train to the town of Berwick-upon-Tweed, up near the Scottish border, and begin a 61-mile walk that will take us along the North Sea coastline to Holy Island (home of the Lindisfarne Gospels) and through any number of charming villages and past I forget how many castles.

[livejournal.com profile] roseambr has never been in this part of the world before, so I'm looking forward to seeing it through her eyes, as it were. So far, it's just been airport, taxi, and hotel, which, apart from the accents and the whole driving on the left thing, are pretty much the same everywhere.

Photos and commentary to follow as internet access in said charming villages allows.

Then: Edinburgh! And [livejournal.com profile] kispexi2!

It came and went too quickly--seemed to go on and on while we were there, every day filled with new adventures and wonderful people, but fading fast as the realities of everyday life come zooming back.

Hard to come home from a great vacation!

Tell you what--your envy of my travels is canceled out by my envy of the exciting writingo opportunity in your life!

The difference is, you've worked hard to merit your opportunity. Me? I just spent some money. But still, I had a fabulous time, and I hope your thing works out as fabulously.

Berwick-upon-Tweed! That's where one of my old U2 newsgroup buddies lives. Wow, that's so weird... I've never heard of the place otherwise. Have lots of fun!

It's a lovely town, of which I will have a couple of photos as soon as I'm done being jet-lagged. Great trip--practically perfect in every way. Including the necessary hilarity of a couple of truly awful guest houses. And cricket!

Well 'Hello!' back! So was it a hiatus because you decided to paddle across the pond? ;-) I must say I was about to nudge you but then again I don't even post hardly at all so how could I nudge someone, ya know? Anyway, glad to hear from you and by all means I want to see pics as I'm sure everyone does. Oh, and we'll hold the fort down until you return.

You did a fine job of holding down the fort! Managed to stave off the terrorist attack threat until twelve hours after our plane took off from Heathrow. Fine work, sir.

It was a great trip, and I'll have a little more to say about it--hopefully with photos--in the coming day or two.

It was underway, and now it's done. I miss it already, ups, downs, and in-betweens.

More travel notes soon.
