Today's routine was: set sprinkler, do a row of beadwork, stagger out into the nearly unbearable heat and move sprinkler, drink water, do another row of beadwork, and so on.

And behold! My parched garden is slightly happier, my water meter spins upward, and Beading Serenity is one quarter finished.

Incredible! You make me feel shame at my slothy-ness!

[identity profile] emeraldsedai.livejournal.com 2005-08-15 01:30 am (UTC)(link)
No, no! You mistake! Pray, do not misconstrue my beadwork as anything other than the opportunity to sit quietly on a hot afternoon and do very little indeed, all the while hearing Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell read aloud to me by a most amiable gentleman.

It is the least ambitious thing in the world, I do assure you.

And yeah, that 19th-century Brit stuff gets stuck in your head like peanut butter in your hair!

[identity profile] roxymissrose.livejournal.com 2005-08-15 01:55 am (UTC)(link)
*huuuuuuuuug* coolness--absolute coolness! *beams at you*

[identity profile] neroli66.livejournal.com 2005-08-15 03:49 am (UTC)(link)
Purdy!! And shiny! Jayne would be proud to wear it on his kimono. *g*

[identity profile] emeraldsedai.livejournal.com 2005-08-15 04:48 am (UTC)(link)
Ha! And he'd look very fine in it, too!

[identity profile] neroli66.livejournal.com 2005-08-15 05:51 pm (UTC)(link)
And Simon could 'borrow' it when he visits Jayne's bunk...*g*

[identity profile] emeraldsedai.livejournal.com 2005-08-15 07:03 pm (UTC)(link)
Hee! Simon would swim in Jayne's kimono. Wouldn't that be cute?

[identity profile] neroli66.livejournal.com 2005-08-15 07:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh! So damn cute it hurts! Someone needs to write this fic now.

And I love it when comments give you insight into your personal kinks. I've always known I had a kink for tall men. My dad and brother are both over 6 feet so I am used to men that make me feel small, well, smaller...short men make me uncomfortable since I feel huge next to them. That's a huge part of why I love Jayne/Adam so much and took a while to get into Simon/Sean.

I was already semi-aware that translated into a petite/large kink when it came to my het pairings, but never thought of it in slash terms before. But it was the Simon/Jayne pairing that got me liking Simon and slash in the first place and there's a definite petite/large kink factor at work there. Huh.

[identity profile] emeraldsedai.livejournal.com 2005-08-15 07:59 pm (UTC)(link)
Very interesting! *eyes [livejournal.com profile] neroli66 speculatively*

For me, the big size difference is kind of an anti-kink. I always have a hard time with the sheer logistics such a pairing.

But I'm right with you on Jayne/Adam. Being 5'10" myself, I've always felt more comfortable around men who, at a minimum, couldn't actually hide behind me, you know? I dated a pretty, Simon-sized guy for a while, and the whole "prettier than me and smaller too" thing got old in a hurry.

[identity profile] neroli66.livejournal.com 2005-08-15 08:12 pm (UTC)(link)
Which would be why you prefer the Mal/Simon pairing, more of an equality in height. ;-)

Which kinda brings up something else, is the fact that he's the shorter in whatever pairing one prefers a factor in a lot of us slash readers/writers tending to relate more to Simon? Or why he's generally portrayed as the 'female' half of the pairing?

I know that's a broad generalization there but it just seemed a whole lot of us related to the Simon role in slash more when this topic came up in the hoyay thread.

[identity profile] emeraldsedai.livejournal.com 2005-08-15 08:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, speaking just for myself, I relate more to Simon because he's the intellectual city kid, out of his element on the wild-west frontier. But yeah, I think the fact that Simon is portrayed by a relatively small--and unusually pretty--man definitely contributes to his slashability.

[identity profile] neroli66.livejournal.com 2005-08-15 08:50 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh yeah, the pretty helps.

I, however, have little in common with Simon. In fact, only thing that comes to mind is a certain anal-ness about some things. Only in my case it really is only some things where as Simon it's pretty much everything. *g*

So for me relating to him probably has more to do with the fact that I prefer being the one being dwarfed.

Another random kink admission, for all the I prefer being the physically smaller partner, I have definite Dom tendencies. Which might explain why my one slash story came out Dominate!Simon...LOL

[identity profile] emeraldsedai.livejournal.com 2005-08-15 09:05 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, we've seen Dominant Simon more than once (Ariel, with the incompetent surgeon; Trash with paralyzed Jayne; StP over Kaylee's near-dead body...). Simon In Charge is very hot.

[identity profile] neroli66.livejournal.com 2005-08-15 11:58 pm (UTC)(link)
This is true, there is canon evidence that Simon has an inner Dom. *nods*

[identity profile] ilconditoreador.livejournal.com 2005-08-18 04:22 am (UTC)(link)
I'm 6'6" and just about that wide. Somehow I usually end up with fairly petite women, but they have, TO A WOMAN, all told me that they liked to ride horses when they were young. I kid you not!

Everybody has a niche, I guess . . .

[identity profile] emeraldsedai.livejournal.com 2005-08-18 04:29 am (UTC)(link)
I believe it.

[identity profile] neroli66.livejournal.com 2005-08-18 04:57 am (UTC)(link)
Can't say I rode horses much when I was young, but then again I'm not really petite either...LOL

[identity profile] ilconditoreador.livejournal.com 2005-08-18 04:25 am (UTC)(link)
Hey, Jayne is ALL MAN, and he only hangs out with MANLY MEN! I, for instance, have my name tooled into the leather on my belt so Jayne remembers who he's a-hempin'.

Is this too much informatin?

[identity profile] emeraldsedai.livejournal.com 2005-08-18 04:28 am (UTC)(link)
In a word...

Hee!!!

[identity profile] neroli66.livejournal.com 2005-08-18 04:58 am (UTC)(link)
Oh yes, he is all man, not convinced on the only hanging out with manly men part though. That Mudder was kinda pretty and looked a lot like Simon. *g*

[identity profile] kispexi2.livejournal.com 2005-08-15 04:57 pm (UTC)(link)
*admires greatly*

Sean will look lovely wearing that coat!

[identity profile] emeraldsedai.livejournal.com 2005-08-15 07:04 pm (UTC)(link)
So...you're thinking a size Small, then.

[identity profile] kispexi2.livejournal.com 2005-08-15 07:21 pm (UTC)(link)
Not sure you wanna hear what I'm thinking ... string vests, loin cloth, sarong ...

He would love it, I'm sure. Please make you mind up to give it to Sean. And the beadwork.

[identity profile] emeraldsedai.livejournal.com 2005-08-15 07:54 pm (UTC)(link)
You know, you really are evil.

[identity profile] neroli66.livejournal.com 2005-08-15 08:04 pm (UTC)(link)
[livejournal.com profile] kispexi2 evil? No!!

[identity profile] tehomet.livejournal.com 2005-08-15 06:54 pm (UTC)(link)
It looks fabulous. How long does a row take?

[identity profile] emeraldsedai.livejournal.com 2005-08-15 07:02 pm (UTC)(link)
It depends on how long the row is and how many stupid mistakes I make. A quick, mistake-free row only takes a few minutes. A couple of them have taken an hour.

Once the pattern starts to emerge, though, it's quite engaging to keep going and watch it develop.

[identity profile] str8ontilmornin.livejournal.com 2005-08-16 12:57 am (UTC)(link)
Well woohoo!! I've been expectantly waiting for the next pics!

[identity profile] emeraldsedai.livejournal.com 2005-08-16 02:12 am (UTC)(link)
It seems that my eyesight has deteriorated enough in the past few years that I can only do beadwork now with the help of natural daylight. This means that the project is going to proceed very slowly, mostly on weekends.

But I'll keep posting my progress!

[identity profile] roseambr.livejournal.com 2005-08-16 08:06 pm (UTC)(link)
This is looking wonderful. I know just what you mean about the deteriorating eye sight. Enough so that I'm looking into eye health supplements to try and slow this down. I feel like my vision is quickly deteriorating to a very bad point. You have inspired me to get back into beading myself. I thought all week while in Denver about making something small, nothing as large or ambitious as your logo, but something usable. If I come up with a picture will you help me develop the pattern on your nifty software?

[identity profile] emeraldsedai.livejournal.com 2005-08-16 09:36 pm (UTC)(link)
I absolutely will!

And yay! You're back! Let's talk soon. (I wonder if the hyaluronic acid would help with eyesight at all...)
