I awoke to the news about the Japan earthquake and tsunami. Some expert said that it could hit the US west coast and I immediately thought of Cannon Beach and how I had thought the tsunami warning posters and siren a tad over-cautious ...

And over-cautious those things turned out to be today, thank goodness. Better that than under-cautious, all in all.

I'm reeling a bit from the day's news. One always feels both lucky and guilty to be safe, alive and well at moments like these.

Absolutely. As well as awestruck at the sheer power of earthquakes.

I'm reading snippets suggesting that it threw the planet a little off its axis, and changed the period of rotation by some fraction of a second.

Thanks. I'm sure that kind of thing happens in other places, but it's very characteristic of Portland in March: a low, heavy sky in the east while the sun breaks out in the west, late in the day. It results in that lurid, vivid light and, very often, a brilliant rainbow against the black-looking sky.

Birches look especially striking in those circumstances.
