Thanks. I'm sure that kind of thing happens in other places, but it's very characteristic of Portland in March: a low, heavy sky in the east while the sun breaks out in the west, late in the day. It results in that lurid, vivid light and, very often, a brilliant rainbow against the black-looking sky.
Birches look especially striking in those circumstances.
