That's essentially how the "Prairie style" wrap is made. To my delight, it seems that with the fingering-weight yarn I chose, on the needles I was using, with the gauge I produce in garter, two rows equaled one stitch. No fiddling with distributing stitch counts. It was a big part of the project's utter simplicity.

I think I just got lucky.
