Excellent point. I watch it--enjoy it, even--but because I wasn't a Morse fan and probably only ever saw one or two episodes of it by accident, watching Endeavour feels a bit like reading fanfic in a fandom where I'm not intimate with the source material.

Like, clearly, Morse the original character had a drinking problem and a problem with authority, but I haven't yet seen any evidence in Endeavour of why younger Morse drinks or gets drunk. Or why he's so shattered about women. Clearly, the Morse-fandom audience is being catered to, but I'm not feeling it myself.

Also, it's surprisingly light on slashy goodness (though I got a little bit excited about Thursday's son in the second ep...)

All that said, Shaun Evans is lovely and very engaging to watch, and the music of course is beautiful, and the attention to period detail is really excellent. So it's not like I'm not right this minute acquiring this evening's episode. :D
