Pirating some sucker's unsecured wireless network while stopped at Oakland. Sitting in the view car.

Oops, here we go. Network dying...

Oooh, just picked up all your instalments. I can hear the soothing rhythm of the train and everything...

Gay men on the menu?!

Unflushable toilets not so good :-(

Your description of the lightless night made me nostalgic for similar journeys I've made.

I love long-distance train travel.

Actually that trip has been on my radar for years and years, well before I discovered the fandom.

There's nothing like the view from a train. You're making me all nostalgic--except for the no flushing part, ew. That's pretty darn inconvenient.

Pressure or vacuum or whatever was re-attained at some point in the middle of the night, so it wasn't too dire.

The view has been fascinating. Not always pretty--in fact, quite ugly in many urban sections--but all views that you can't really get any other way.

We've arrived in Santa Barbara now and so far it's been a fun adventure. "Training" as the veteran "trainers" call it, is a very nice way to travel if you're not in a rush. I will definitely do it again.
