Question: what is better on a chilly, rainy autumn Saturday than drinking a latte and seeing the FedEx truck pull up outside with a new toy for you to play with? Answer: hardly anything!
Every now and then I have a mad moment of certainty that some new tech toy will actually make my life better. I had one of those moments a couple of weeks ago. The result? Redfly. It's a dumb clamshell that uses your smartphone as its brain. All it does is give your phone a touch-typing keyboard and an eight-inch screen.
Which, when you think about it--hey, this smartphone can do almost all of what I use a laptop for: surf the internet, create documents, send emails and stuff, if only I could actually type on it or see a damn thing on that tiny-ass screen, right?
So Redfly bridges that gap.
Mine came today, and presented some driver problems, and I was gonna send it back, but the company that makes it emailed me a beta driver within a couple of hours and it worked, and I'm all, "Whee!"
So, this is kind of a phone post.

But yeah, the Redfly is pretty cool.

9/11/08 21:41 (UTC)now you can really get stuff done!!

9/11/08 22:01 (UTC)There are still some glitches. Not with the Redfly--it's working great!--but with Google docs on a mobile browser. You can read, but neither edit nor download. Which is limiting.
So I'm not quite to the fantasyland of being able to connect with the cloud anytime, anywhere, and do anything I need to do, but I'm getting closer.
By the way? 8100 words. And it's taking me to some darker places than I'd imagined when I was imagining all firelight and charcoal sketches and bruising gallops across open country.
