Joining the trend here to ask if anyone who likes me at all has a Dreamwidth code/invite they'd care to give me. I'd be ever so grateful.

*wants one real bad*

TIA!

They're opening up to the public at the end of the month and you can get a (short-term) paid account for a pretty trifling amount -- I've been seeing $8 for 3 months tossed around as the proposed amount on the listserv conversation in the last couple of months. The nice thing about them is that once you have an account, even if your paid account expires, you don't lose it. It basically reverts to their version of a "basic" account.

So something to consider (and this is what I'm planning to do): get a minimum paid account when they open to the public at the end of the month so I can give it a try and see what I think, then go ahead and dig in a little deeper if I really like it. I'm SO on board with what they're trying to do, and the whole philosophy behind what's driving that project, so I feel good about supporting the cause, so to speak.

Oh well duh*. Here's their price list:

http://www.dreamwidth.org/support/faqbrowse.bml?faqid=4

So I guess they settled on $3/mo., $6/2 mo. as their low price point.

*(Hadn't been to their FAQ since they got the pricing up. The listserv has weekly updates and they're...informative. Which is awesome, to be sure, but they're so informative that as the launch date approaches, I haven't been reading them as closely.)

So, roughly the same price-point that LJ will bear. Makes sense.

I don't mind paying. I just wanted to be one of the kool kids who got onboard BEFORE the payin' started.

I'm very much on board with what they're trying to do. I remember when LJ was trying to do something similar. I'm sure you've seen this alternative theory (http://tehdely.livejournal.com/88823.html) of #amazonfail by now, but it also contains an interesting explanation of Strikethrough.

Not sure what my point here is, except a sort of vague groping toward the idea that new things on the internet go wild and stay free, but freedom seems to mean susceptibility to hoaxing, "bantown"ing and general hysteria generating. And, um, I hope Dreamwidth stays free for a while.

Ahh, the kool kid factor...I can relate. ;)

Well, if it helps, here's some additional info that came from the listserv yesterday:

>from "The Invite Thing":

"Rest assured, as soon as April 30 rolls around, everyone with a Dreamwidth account will have a ton of invite codes to give out, everyone who's subscribed to one of our mailing lists or has set and validated an email address on their OpenID account will get an invite code that they can use if they want to, and if you absolutely can't find an invite code to use, you'll be able to create a paid account for as little as $3 for one month (and, if you choose not to keep paying us after that, the account will continue to exist as a free account after it expires)."

Additionally, both of those methods make you eligible for the invite code giveaways they're doing in the meantime:

>from "The People Thing":

"...we've been handing out invites in a bunch of ways: to random people who are subscribed to our mailing lists, to random people who have set and validated an email address on their OpenID account, to existing users for them to hand out, etc, etc.

...We're sending out between 50-75 invites a day as we try to push that traffic upwards. Most days, we're using the "validated OpenID accounts" method of distributing invites, and we're choosing from that set randomly every day."

Thanks! I haven't been following this issue as closely as I might wish. I'm on internet-brain-overload.

Appreciate the extract!
