I see the moon
16/7/08 12:13A challenge: walk somewhere, even if you have time for just a few steps, but walk somewhere outdoors or in a big enough space that you have some distant things to look at--trees, buildings, parked cars, whatever. As you walk, look to one side or the other and notice things going by.
Then notice the things behind those things. And if you can see any things behind those things, notice how they move, too.
The nearest things fly past you. The most distant move with you. Every kid who's ever watched the moon from a moving car knows this, but when was the last time you noticed it?
And the in-between things--did you ever notice how they move in shifting layers, relative to you, to the background, to each other?
This is one of the vision exercises from the eyesight training I'm taking. And as soon as I started doing it, not only did my vision begin to clear, but my mind began to settle in a way that I've achieved before only through some kind of hard-to-do meditation.
And from that settled, here-and-now, "oh-cool-lookit-everything-moving!" state of mind, some kind of biochemical changes seem to arise, too, because I just feel in love with the world, and everything in it. And the moon.
