I'm still watching Supernatural. Season 14. The little show that could.
Show has had its ups and downs, and the fandom--which seems to have expanded rather than contracted over the years--is almost as nutty as ever. But I still like the boys.
I long since stopped being a focused enough fan to get involved in ship wars or fanwank.
I have no expectations of any canon Destiel. I'm perfectly happy with the expansion of the universe to include Apocalypse World hunters (including doubles of our old friends), the return of Mary, the British Men of Letters (though their ultimate banishment from our shores was satisfying), and Jack. I loved the return of Chuck. The musical episode brought a tear to my eye. I thought the episode from the POV of the Impala was brilliant...
...and I really liked Byzantium last night. So no death is ever permanent on Supernatural and we knew Jack wasn't gonna stay dead, and of course someone made some crappy deal with a supernatural creature to bring Jack back. Okay by me: Family and bad deals. As they say, that's it. That's the show.
The reunion of Jack with Kelly Kline was lovely and the mourning/drinking/nougat scene was just solid gold. This is no country for old men, and the boys are getting there, and the end is surely in sight. I'm just enjoying it until that ending comes.

Overcooked
25/5/14 23:22It's been a peculiarly stressful week, beginning with a short visit from my brother, who flew up from Santa Barbara for our oldest sister's milestone 60th birthday.
(First of all, oh my god how do I have a sixty year old sister?)
I both love and like my brother, and we get along well. We had a nice time together.

from left to right: DarkEm, niece, younger sister, niece, niece, Mom, niece, brother, the birthday girl
( But... )

It's a long, long road
20/5/14 22:03I'll have to read a lot of meta before I get all the plot-bits straightened out in my mind. Very often, other people help me understand what I liked and didn't like about a given show. But I know I liked some things right off.
Spoilers below the cut ( from which there is no return )
I feel like Show has dug in and found one more catlike life, and I'm surprised and very happy to be looking forward to a tenth season.

Vacation week four
23/1/14 21:24I still feel like I'm just on vacation. Today, as I begin my fourth week of retirement, I officially exceed my previous record for most consecutive days off work since 1989.
I was doing the night-owl thing to an unhealthy degree the first week or two, but that's wearing off, and today I actually got up a little before 9:00 a.m. That seems a decent hour for getting out of bed in the morning, don't you think? Civilized.
Everyone who recommended taking plenty of time before imposing a new structure on myself: you were so right. Thank you.
And as to how I'm spending my time?
roxymissrose Someone whose name shall be crossed out in a transparent attempt to point blamey, blamey fingers, mentioned re-watching "All Hell Breaks Loose" (the last two episodes of Supernatural Season 2) and was all OMG it's still so powerful and amazing, so I was going to Netflix it and then I thought what the hey I'll just watch all of S2, and now...
...Now I'm having a heart attack all over again watching the Impala get smashed into by a semi, and Sam is yelling "DEAN!!!" and the helicopters are coming, and I'm remembering how absolutely great this show was and why I've been such a fan all these years.
(And wow, Jensen doesn't age.)

How can a show going on nine years old suddenly become so good again? Is it just me being sentimental, with the return of the fundamental Supernatural "he ain't heavy he's my brother" theme? I really enjoyed 9x01.
Edited to add this because it's the perfect accompaniment to my nostalgic, fannish feelings this evening.

If it weren't for
vampirefan and our longstanding tradition of chatwatching Supernatural, I don't think I'd have the nerve to face this week's meta episode. I mostly hated the previous ones, and there they only played around with fanfic and fan conventions.

So begins my 56th year
6/12/10 14:50( What a splendid birthday! )
Not exactly a party animal, I know (well, I never was), but I had a lovely, lovely day from start to finish, and I hope everybody else's birthdays will always be as nice as mine was yesterday.

Twi-hard rewatch-a-logue
23/10/10 10:49I liked "Live Free or Twi-Hard" so much that I'm rewatching it this morning. That's...I don't remember when I enjoyed an ep of SPN quite this much for quite these reasons.
( So let me count the ways. Totally self-indulgent, sporadically-illustrated rewatch-a-logue under here. Because I liked the episode that much. )

Dear Supernatural
22/10/10 21:53( Dear Supernatural,
You have many flaws and stuff, but can I just say... )
ETA: Hey! I really enjoyed tonight's episode. Watching it, I felt my fannishness and SHOW love coming back. I'm engaged again, I'm really interested to know what's wrong with Sam, I loved scrappy heroic Dean, and even Pa Campbell seemed okay to me--though I gather the fandom as a body kind of hates him.
I enjoyed the absence of angels (not that I don't love Cas--I do!--but I find the angel storylines murky, at best), and the whole episode moved along at a good, almost exposition-free clip that didn't give me too much time to think about, say, why Lisa's still putting up with Dean, let alone time to check my email.
So, yay for the return to a form of SPN like what I fell in love with. Also, Jensen. Guh.

I'm never good at summing up and analyzing an episode of Supernatural right after watching it--partly because my attention span is crap, and partly because it's just not that lucidly written.
( But I must try. Cut for spoilery comments )
And also? It's time for Dean to stop using the cutesie lame movie and TV references. It's gotten really old. That said, "Six Degrees of Heaven Bacon" was just stupidly funny.
And also, also? They SO don't need a Season Six.

Supernatural 5.08: My overall assessment is "dumb episode": no forward plot motion, still more uncomfortable and shark-jumping-esque self-referential hilarity, and another new player in the Apocalypse Games.
I laughed, I admit it. And seeing Jensen shot in bright, colorful light for a change was interesting and strange and made his eyes very, very green (though frankly, he and Jared are both far more beautiful in the greyed-out Supernatural world). It was amusing, but come on, let's get on with it! Stop with the fanservice already, Kripke.
In other miscellany, I NEED A CAMERA. Mine was stolen months ago, and I'm about ready to splurge on a replacement. I miss taking my unartistic little illustrative photos.
Oh, and I liked this, from Warren Ellis by way of Wil Wheaton:
At least half of all writing involves just sitting and staring into space. Letting your brain out to hunt down ideas, bringing them back all warm and bloody between its teeth.

Quick fic rec
24/9/09 16:35Every once in a while you come across a story that does just exactly what you turn to fanfic to have done; a story that exemplifies what fanfic is all about
Brothers by
nwhepcat is that story. It fixes a major issue with its show (Supernatural, natch!), it explores with a light hand a relationship that doesn't get quite the canon airtime we'd like (Dean/Castiel--friendship); it provides THE answer to THE issue that canon is dancing around, it has perfect character voices, it's funny, and it makes you want to leap out of your chair and shout "Yessss!"
If you're a Supernatural fan at all, go read it. It's short. It's worksafe. It's absolutely a gem.

Supernatural has had some beautiful design and direction over the seasons, but I don't know when I've seen a frame I liked quite as well as this one from 5.01.

Sam is very, very low!

Yeah, but how does it FEEL?
13/5/09 17:50My break from working on Restraint has borne some fruit. I woke up this morning knowing that I should leave the serial numbers on.
Why? It just felt better. And if I don't follow my gut in creative matters, what the hell am I doing being creative at all? Huh? Look at all the glee I get to retain if Restraint stays fanfic:
So, fic it is. Yay! I can get back to writing.

- Owzers's fantastic manips
- All four prologues if I want
- Posting in parts
- Posting in ebook form to OTW's Archive of Our Own
- Soundtrack!
- Minor RP character glee
- The silly Supernatural in-jokes that got in there on Day One and have resisted being edited back out
- The ridiculous Latin pun on Mr Acklebury's name

This must be love
12/12/08 12:22It came! It's here! It's my new Xperia X1 phone, and it's fabulous.
It's slim and cool-metal sleek, and satisfyingly heavy in the hand. The keyboard slides out in this sort of little curvy way. The display is sharp and bright and high-res, and the touch screen is incredibly sensitive and responsive. It has an FM radio--a feature I didn't care about till I tried it this morning on my way to work and realized that the radio owns way more music than I do.
I'm riding the bus and listening to KGON Classic Rock (aka Dean Winchester music) and reading my instructions and pressing buttons and just generally geeking out, and just as I get downtown and step out into the rain, KGON starts playing "Renegade" by Styx. I am not kidding.
(*sings* Oh, mama, I'm in fear for my life from the long arm of the law...)
My fellow Supernatural fans will appreciate how much this put a big shit-eating grin on my face.
So I pass a good-looking kid on the street who, though I can't hear him (because of the rather good in-ear earphones that came with the phone), makes it clear by sign language that he would like me to spare him some change.
In my mind, I'm all, well, I can't because I just spent a perfectly ridiculous sum of money on a new phone. And then I felt like crap and started blaming the world for being topsy turvy.
Which it is. But my new phone is making me kind of happy.

Yay! It's Monday. [/sarcasm]
*Crap food contains: HCFS or any other kind of corn that isn't actual yellow kernels you can see, MSG in any form (and oh! there are so many forms!), hydrogenated or altered fats, growth hormones, artificial sweeteners, artificial colors, artificial flavors, stuff with more than five ingredients--particularly if you're not sure how some of them are pronounced or can't picture them in your head; flesh of animals fed their own kind.
**Good food: Pretty much everything else.
***Although I overslept and came in quite late, so really? More like an 11.5 hour day. Slacker!
Yay! It's Monday. [/sarcasm]
- The secret to losing weight is to eat a whole lot less than you've been eating. The secret to doing that, apparently, is to take it in phases--first give up all crap food* but eat as much as you want of good food** for about six months; then for another six months cut good food consumption back to the caloric levels recommended for your height, build and age by "recognized authorities"; and finally decide that you're gonna have to get used to being hungrier than that because the authorities are wrong--which for me is involving some hypnosis.
- Google Chrome does not yet apparently support Windows XP Professional in the NT Server environment. Alas! Because I really like it at home, and I'd like to like it at work.
- Dean Winchester really is a very attractive character.
- It is a bit of a slog, getting through Battlestar Galactica season 2.0 because of all the dire containing no Leoben.
- Working thirteen hour days--news flash--continues to suck***.
