God it's hot in here. I've got two window fans running. Night has fallen and it's not helping that much. This high-powered laptop sure will be nice in the winter, is all I'm saying.
I'm watching Dexter, which is both really good and really disturbing. It's weird to identify with the sociopathic serial-killer title character, but judging by the show's four-season duration, his inability to connect with normal human life must resonate with a lot of people. "Score one for the little wooden boy" is the line that closed the episode I just watched, and I'm all, "Wow. Yeah. I get that."
Stood in the sun for a little while today near where Leverage was shooting, hoping for a Sighting. Alas, work called before the Hair of Kane, or any other recognizable feature or face appeared, but it was fun listening to the (real, actual Portland) police officer promoting the show while he directed foot traffic away from the Television Zone. "Yeah, it's got Timothy Hutton and Christian Kane in it. It's on TNT. Portland's supposed to be Boston--that's why those police vehicles over there say 'Boston Police'--but it's pretty good."
Any minute now, this excess of sweating is going to drive me into the waste of many, many gallons of cool and otherwise potable water.

21/7/09 16:57 (UTC)The books are pretty good too. The show diverges pretty quickly from the books in terms of plot and, iirc, background story, which isn't really a surprise given the change in medium; but what I find interesting is how different Dexter himself is after 3 seasons versus 4 books. Both characterizations still feel like Dex, but they end up at different in terms of their assessment of themselves and the accuracy (as I see it) of those assessments. I'm not sure to what degree the difference is in the writing versus the performance (I listened to, rather than read, the books), but in both cases, Dexter is fascinating.

21/7/09 19:27 (UTC)He really is one of the most fascinating characters I've ever run across, and the fact that these were novels before they were TV seasons explains a lot. Novels can still go places that TV can only follow sometimes.

23/7/09 17:00 (UTC)also, remember i told you about those urban fantasy books that are about 2 brothers fighting supernatural stuff? kind of remind me of sam and dean? i just bought the 4th book in the series and saw that she (and yes rob thurman turns out to be a woman) has a site and an lj: http://robgoodfella.livejournal.com/
i just read a few of her posts and she is one of us. lol! she laments that russel t davies (torchwood) ripped out her heart and then of course the discussion goes on to joss whedon and how he's killed her will to live at least 3 times.

23/7/09 17:47 (UTC)The thing with Dexter isn't so much the gore--it's kind of gross in places, for sure, but it's not slash and splatter (much). It's far, far more disturbing on the meta level where in every episode you like the serial killer better and better.
