My boss, a woman of about my age who is extremely athletic and spends her vacations climbing things (like Andes) today said, "You've really caught the bike commuting spirit!"

This was in response to my attending our bi-weekly one-on-one meeting in damp-legged jeans and soaked shoes, because, as I told her, riding in the rain was preferable to getting on a crowded bus.

She has good reason to be surprised: by contrast to her vigorous lifestyle, I must seem a complete slug, good at the computer work, but kind of large and lazy. Cats to her dogs. WriterCon to her rock-climbing. But we have one thing in common now besides our employer, and nobody's more astonished than I am.

I'm really going to have to tackle the Rain Gear In My Size issue, though. Soon.

I too have finally succumbed to the waterproof trouser. Here's something strange I found out: you can't get radio reception through two layers of Gortex.

Really? You mean, if your phone is in the Goretex pocket of Goretex trousers, it won't get a signal?

Wow, I could make a Goretex pouch and protect myself from the evil waves!

Hee. Perfect icon - because when I told Mr Kis of my discovery, we both instantly thought 'Tinfoil Hats!'

The only weak link in the rain gear is the foot wear. Riding a motorcycle in stormy weather can be a very fun and damp experience.

Yes! It's amazing how exposed the tops of the feet are out there. They have bootie-things, like waterproof drawstring bags to go over your shoes. I might have to look into those.

Sounds like a visit is due to the new sporting goods stores in town. Perhaps the only way to assure a good fit. I've thought of you and the rain and your bike many a down-pour. Something is needed to make sitting at your desk the rest of the day bearable. Being damp all day is not good for the immune system!

Yeah, sporting goods stores aren't known for carrying women's things in my kind of sizes. Because women my size don't actually do anything. I could buy men's, but if I'm going to do that, I'm going to do it online and save myself a few sneers.

(Sorry--am having a day of totally righteous anger.)

Fit isn't super-crucial for rain pants--they just need to go on over whatever work trousers or jeans I'm wearing, and tuck in to whatever rain boots I'm also going to need. Which will also be hard to find in my size.

I love a challenge.
