I really like the mayor of Portland. I wish the pearl-clutchers would quit trying to recall him.

Sam Adams, my boss's boss's boss's boss's boss, has survived a really nasty recall effort of the Clinton Impeachment variety (no links, no love, no energy, but if you're curious, it's out there), and has never once wavered in his public face as a hardworking, progressive, and effective mayor.

He's also fun, funny, and hip. And he rides a bike.

And once he answered the scandal charges, he never, ever spoke of it again. I like that in a leader, especially one I voted for. The scandalmongering haters will never let him off the hook: another recall effort is in the making, apparently--"Now with 50% more Big Money Behind It!"--and I hope it fails as miserably with money as it did from the grassroots.

So anyway, Sam has posted his 2009 year in review already (most public agencies do that in, like, June of next year), and among his "by the numbers" tallies:

2...Number of marriages Sam officiated
4...Number of states where Sam could be legally married
1...Number of Sam's staffers who fell into the Willamette River (I have no idea...)
700...square feet of grass converted to a vegetable garden at City Hall
250...pounds of food harvested from the garden and given to Loaves and Fishes

He has a great team. He Twitters (substantively and often amusingly) several times a day. His staff blog and web pages are actually worth reading (if you live in Portland, anyway). He's never not working, it seems like. And his staff, who also Twitter, follow the Leverage and Whedonverse folks. Bona fide cool.

One of my favorite recent Sam Tweets:

Congrats to Houston Mayor-Elect Annise Parker, now US's largest city openly gay Mayor; from the US's 2nd largest city openly gay mayor.
