We ate (I made a kind of impromptu salade niçoise only with thin sautéed pork slices instead of tuna) and talked (Comicon, Joss directing "The Avengers," fandom, personal growth, work), and then we spent a thrilling hour going over the features of her brand new Droid X phone.
I want I want I want. I am so ready to make the jump. I'm just waiting either for an unlocked version, or for my provider to offer one on its network.
It's surprising, what will constitute the tipping-point in a case like this, and for me, last night, it was one little Android app: the Firefly Soundboard.
It's a nothing part, until you don't got one: it's just a collection of great soundbites from Firefly and Serenity (plus one great one from Castle) that you can select and play. The only thing it does is make you smile and go \o/. And that's not nothin'.

25/7/10 19:05 (UTC)Can't wait for you to get your own Droid object of geektastic affection. (Oh, and last night, the Kindle app appeared on my phone last night. Not sure if it was automatically downloaded somehow, if I accidentally downloaded it and didn't realize it, or if it was already installed and I never noticed it, but it answers your question about e-reading apps. I'm sure there are others available, just haven't gone searching for any.)
Love your description here of the soundboard thing, as you knew I would. :) You completely get how awesome that app is, also as I knew you would. Sure, it doesn't identify landmarks from a picture and bring up all relevant web hits for it, scan a book cover and give you the availability and price info for all online merchants, or listen to a snippet of music and identify the song, artist, album, lyrics, etc. Being able to tote around that little piece of Browncoat love for a shot of the 'verse when one needs a little boost? Priceless.

29/7/10 22:51 (UTC)In fact, just in terms of functionality, I can live with my current phone, but what I really want is the big screen that's twice the size of my current one, all bright and legible and thumb-able. My current phone is for younger eyes. I had younger eyes when I bought it!
