My very dear niece, the one who watched all of the X-Files and most of The West Wing with me in her earlier teenage years, is leaving us soon for a summer working stint in a wonderfully adventurous location.

She came over last night and we looked at maps and talked about all the things she'll be able to do with the money she earns. "World travel" figured largely in the discussion.
When I was her age, I went off for a summer job in a remote location (not quite as remote--Sequoia National Park), and it was a great transitional experience which resulted in money saved, followed by world travel, so I'm really excited for her.
I'm afraid I couldn't refrain from some "Take it from me, kid" comments, mostly along the lines of "Yes! Go and do everything while you can because it really does get harder as you get older."
