The not-too-rusty Sea Epoch is at the Steel Bridge grain elevator today. It's a bulk freighter of Panamanian registry, built in 1998. If you want to use the Sea Epoch to transport your stuff, it'll set you back $25,000 a day.

Back in July 2002, the Sea Epoch caused a 19 tonne crude oil spill by colliding with a Panamax tanker off Singapore. The Sea Epoch hit the starboard side of the tanker Lance Naik Karam Singh, sustaining slight damage to its own bow and obviously punching a goodish hole in the tanker. Nobody was hurt, both vessels remained afloat, and Singapore sent eight anti-pollution craft to clean up the spill.

In July 2004, the Sea Epoch carried a record quantity of alumina out of Bunbury Port near Perth, Australia. A few days later, in unrelated news, Bunbury Port Harbourmaster Helen Cole appeared on Australian national television and talked about working her way up from sea cadet to first female Harbourmaster in Australia.

Go, Helen.

The Sea Epoch passed through Gibraltar this past February on its way from Damietta, Egypt to Ponta da Madeira, Brazil. It all sounds so exotic! But I'm guessing that deepwater harbors, like suburban sprawl, all look pretty much the same. Though I do wonder if grain elevators everywhere have huge "amazon.com wouldn't fit here" ads painted on 'em. Ours does.

Sometime between February 22 and now, the Sea Epoch made its way from the Brazilian coast, presumably through the Panama Canal, all the way north to Portland to get some wheat. It was looking pretty full when I went by this morning.

Next stop, probably Asia again. Dear Sea Epoch: Please avoid colliding with the Steel Bridge as you leave, 'cause that's how I get to work every day. Thanks.

Aucksome! Again, thank you for sharing another tiny jeweled door, well maybe even a beaded door to match your hat. Your interests are many and I think that's grand. Glad to know you.

Thanks! "Life in Portland" is--for reasons that should be pretty clear--a topic that interests me.

See ya at FAN tonight. With or without homework. Probably without, I'm sorry to say. My political awareness is under scaffolding at the moment.

Actually I'll be working on the house tonight, but Brittney will be there. Gotta get this house done right quick.
