darkemeralds: Jensen Ackles in Regency Attire (Restraint John)
Several people have mentioned wanting to download Restraint in its entirety using one of the handy ebook formats at the AO3. I would like to do this myself, actually. The last time I tried, however, I failed in all formats.

I entered a support request and the lovely support people at the Archive quickly responded that yes indeed, 220,000 words is a longer chunk of long than the export function could handle. As far as I know, the problem isn't resolved.*

SO: I'm going to make my own Mobi, ePub, and plain HTML versions**, probably over the weekend, and figure out how to make them available.

UPDATED TO ADD that I've successfully downloaded the ePub version directly to my Android phone. No luck with Mobi, but I'm not sure whether that's a phone configuration problem or a problem with the AO3-created file.

*If you've discovered otherwise, please let me know. I can't check from work.

**While I'm at it, is there another format I should be making?

Why I Contribute Cashy Money to the OTW, by DarkEmeralds

An Archive of Our Own, pure and simple.

The AO3 is what I've been waiting for my entire fannish life: a place where fans can post and store their fanworks, without fear of strikethroughs, account terminations, cease-and-desists, or closure based on content*. A multi-fandom treasure-trove of written works, the AO3 might soon be a place for vids, too!

I want the AO3 to grow and endure, so I give them money. Not a lot, but after supporting a big national charity for years through my employer's giving campaign, last year I took a few minutes and arranged to send that same regular, small amount to the OTW instead.

It was easy! It was painless! And every payday I get an email from my credit union saying that a latte-factor's worth of money has gone to an organization that supports, understands and loves something that makes my life a more joyful and creative place.

I've never been happier with a money contribution, never more certain that what I'm supporting with my scarce dollars is genuinely worth my support.

For me it's all about the Archive, but the OTW is active on several important fannish fronts, notably legal advocacy of fanworks, and scholarly work in the area of fanworks and fandom. Besides, they are just plain cool people, responsive to their members, excited and open about what they do.

I hope that fandom people who can spare a few bucks will consider giving them to the OTW. It will make you smile.

*Their terms of service are here. The key bit, for me, is this: "Unless it violates some other policy, we will not remove Content for offensiveness, no matter how awful, repugnant, or badly spelled we may personally find that content to be."

I spent an hour this morning fiddling around at the AO3, because Restraint, in all its 185,000-word glory, presents some challenges to the AO3 posting interface (and my own tracking capabilities). Three or four chapters were somehow duplicates, and the chapter numbering was off.

I've now corrected these defects, but not without casualties: several lovely comments got deleted along with the duplicate chapters they were attached to. At least two of them, from yesterday, I hadn't yet answered.

Comments really are love, and the comment conversations that have grown up around Restraint are wonderful. I go back and re-read them for inspiration sometimes, and several people have told me that they read them, too.

I'm sorry that I deleted any of them; if I'd know it would happen, I'd have at least saved screenshots before starting on the cleanup. If a comment that you wrote is among the fallen, I apologize, and if you commented on Chapter 36: In Which Tristan Casts The First Stone, and haven't had a reply from me, this is why.

My dry spell on Restraint (the Regency J2 AU) has come to an end in the last couple of days. This weekend I've written most of the bridge section whose absence was preventing any further progress. I feel like I can finally write through to the end now. OMG this has been a long haul. Started that sucker more than a year ago, and have been stuck for the last three months.

It feels wonderful to have found my feet again on this novel. I've never discovered anything more fun than writing fresh new story--new snarky dialog, new minor plot twists, new character reveals. I LOVE THIS STUFF!

In other fannish activity, I just finished recording the eleventh of the twelve chapters of my Podbang entry. Many hours of editing lie before me. Many, many, many hours of editing. But the recording is almost done.

And I posted one of my very few fics to the A-Triple-Oh! Archive. PEOPLE WHO ARE IN THE OPEN BETA: Do you post locked or unlocked, and why?

Oh, and I just started watching "White Collar". Wow. Fun AND slashable. I like.

And finally, I took 25 night photos this evening and only one was any good.
