This is kind of unnerving. I came home tonight just before dark to find that the old dishwasher that I've had out on my porch for a couple of months had vanished.

There were dings in my front porch steps. One of my walkway lights was broken. And the heavy, awkward, ancient and not-that-functional dishwasher was gone.

Now, I'd been meaning to get rid of it as soon as I could work up the gumption to get it down the stairs and out to the street, so it's not like I'm sorry to see it go. Someone actually kind of did me a favor. But whoever it was came up to my front porch and stole a big old dishwasher in broad daylight and that's just disturbing.

That would make me nervous as well.

However this might calm your mind just a tad -

OMG, I saw that earlier today! Huge WTF factor, but hey--if they build it, I will come.

And I do believe it is now your birthday there in the Central time zone. Happy Birthday!

Yeah. It's not like it could have been stealthily done. It wasn't a council job was it? Maybe a neighbour complained. ;-)

Hee! No. The house next door is, as an old boyfriend used to put it, "the double-wide" (a manufactured home...aka a big trailer). Across the street, the Alvarezes own two lots, one of them mostly occupied by cars and half-finished outbuildings of dubious purpose. Next to the Alvarezes, the lesbian couple with two kids and two motorcycles are too busy being young and hip to complain about what's on my porch.

So...no. Theft pure and simple. Scrap metal, as [livejournal.com profile] roseambr points out a couple of comments downthread. What's next? The wiring?

Guess those of us with dental fillings better not go slack-jawed in repose.

Between the filling-thieves and the mind-controlling radio waves, we're better off just keeping our mouths shut.

Vandals regularly steal the copper from the library air conditioning units here in Dayton :-(

Good lord. I've heard of that--I have a brother in law who is a residential construction contractor, and he's had all the wiring stolen out of a house in progress. But an established building? A library?? That's pretty shocking.

Heh. The bumper sticker "KEEP PORTLAND WEIRD" is not for naught.

It's very disturbing that so many metal things are being ripped off for their scrap value and the weight alone of that washer would have made it a target. But it's a shame that 1) they broke and damaged your property in the process and 2) the funds probably went towards a drug addiction. Also disturbing is that in a well populated neighborhood no one noticed someone wrestling it off your porch and probably dragging it down the road. I understand your upset. It's the idea that someone (and there are many someones out there) who has no hesitation about entering another person's property, even in broad daylight. Of course, now days, it's safer for them to do it in the daylight than night time when someone is likely to be home. The majority of neighborhoods are unpopulated during the day time. It's all very disturbing and a little scary!

Great icon for the occasion!

Yeah, this morning I noticed other little minor signs of intrusion: a piece of my drip system trailing down the sidewalk, some other stuff disturbed on the porch.

But thank you for the insight about scrap metal. I hadn't thought of that, and it actually makes me feel better--less vulnerable. If they're targeting metal, well, I can either keep metal off my outdoor property, or put it out on the curb for easy, non-invasive pickings.
