Portland Browncoats
27/9/04 13:28I attended my first (ever) fan-related function this weekend: a casual meeting of the Portland Browncoats, aka Firefly fans.
I had certain expectations that were happily proved wrong, notably the one where everyone else there is a "Jayne/Adam-based" fan (which is to say, espousing a political view as part of the fandom). Turned out not to be the case.
One guy, Rick, brought his show-and-tell of the official Firefly presskit, which he won off eBay for some stunning figure representing roughly my mortgage payment. Cool, rare memorabilia inside a small plastic shipping crate labeled in English and Chinese--a "Firefly" hip flask, a pre-air VHS tape of "The Train Job," a letter from Mal to some wartime friends, a Mal Reynolds passport, a lovely t-shirt, a blueprint of the ship...well, it was geek heaven.
We met in a cool used bookstore that lives in an old rundown wooden church. Had a few snacks, chatted and laughed about Firefly, Serenity, and the Jossverse, and television in general. Nice folks, a good time, and next month we're going to do it again!
