I just ate a precious few grams of chanterelle mushrooms (sliced lengthwise, sauteed in a little butter, a few grains of salt) and I swear I can hear angels singing. The really earthy kind of angels, who play string basses and snap their fingers.

That and a bratwurst and some Bubbies sauerkraut, maybe an apple for dessert and I can deal with the storm. Hot cocoa while I watch a DVD (Saiyuki Reload Volume I), and possibly I can work up the gumption to fix Clyde's flat front tire.

Even though it's now pouring down rain, I love October.

My favorite kind. <3

idk. I really love your posts. They're always so happy and restful. They make me calm.

MMMmmmmmm. One of my chef buddies gave me a huge carton of goldens. Seems he checked one of his old foraging grounds and found more than he could take.
Wonderful, wonderful friend.

I'm envious! Though I did notice that the price per pound was nothing like what I expected, so perhaps there's been a bumper crop all over?

I should just go back and buy and bunch more. Man those were delicious.

It's been ages since I ate chanterelles. They're so good. And they smell wonderful, even when raw, don't they? Kind of fruity.

There's just something subtly wonderful about them--they're pretty, they smell nice, they taste wonderful, and they're good for you! Which applies to lots of fruits and vegetables, too, I guess, but chanterelles and other mycoids have the additional distinction of being wild, rare, and kind of dangerous-seeming.

And - occasionally - free! We found a whole load of them in the Trossachs only Mr Kis was in his paranoid/everything-is-poisonous stage and wouldn't eat them. :-(

Heh. Like I said, dangerous! The perfect situation for "when in doubt, don't." I like my liver just the way it is, thanks.

I've only been wild mushroom hunting once, in France. I was with a very experienced family and we made a fantastic meal of mushrooms at the end of the day.

Ooh, well, the next time you come over ... I'd love for you to try (if you haven't already, that is) my very favourite mushroom: the blewit.

Well, I keep hoping to come back, and fall is my favorite time to go anywhere, so perhaps we'll find blewits--which sound wonderful!

IIRC, blewits are a fairly late mushroom. They seem to like frost. The good news is, the park a few hundred yards from here has plenty of them!

Oh, I know how--I flatted three tubes in a row trying my first time, and I got good at it. The problem is going out in the rain to my sister's house to borrow her pump...

So, Clyde is on his back with his fork up today in my living room and I drove to work. Shame...
