10/30 The pink sofa is no more

Can you believe it? IKEA discontinued my pink couch and sold the very last one in the Pacific Northwest yesterday!



The website, which two days ago showed several pink couches in stock, today said the Portland store was sold out. So I rode out there to get some exercise and inquire in person about placing an order against the next shipment.


Unsurprisingly, hardly anyone ever bikes to IKEA

IKEA is famous for discontinuing stuff without notice, and I should have acted more promptly, but...well, I didn't. All my design schemes unraveled as the nice woman in the living-room furniture section confirmed the bad news. But wait, she said. We'll be getting an orange version of the same sofa in April...

So I spent the ride home conjuring up a whole new design involving the saturated orange she showed me a sample of. I think the disappearance of the pink couch might be fortuitous, because I'm liking this intense color better.

Oh thank god. By which I mean, the orange looks so much nicer? You should wait to see how that colour looks against your skin before buying it though...

LOL! You were remarkably restrained in the face of that pink sofa.

I have a raincoat and at least three different shirts in approximately this shade of orange. I don't know what it does to my skin tone, but it's wonderful for my sense of wellbeing.

FWIW, I like the orange version even more than the pink.

Had to smile at your bike in the echoing emptiness of the Ikea bike rack.

And now I'm wondering - how do they flat pack a sofa?

Upholstered-type furniture is the one thing I've never bought from IKEA before. Looking at the available assembly manual, though, I gather that the sofa comes in several boxes, at least two of which are nearly the size of a twin-bed mattress. The back and arm-side things come as separate pieces and get bolted on somehow.

The directions show a single individual in a barred circle and two individuals with marks of approval, by which I surmise that putting this thing together is, more than most IKEA projects, not a one-woman job.

You started a craze! I prefer pink to orange myself. But turquoise would be nice. They got any turquoise?

Sadly, no. The other available colors in this sofa are staid, safe neutrals. There are several bright, Caribbean-blue accessory pieces, however. Side tables, a small chest, a lovely lampshade...
