Waste, beautifully depicted
1/5/08 23:41I'm not entirely sure what to make of artist Chris Jordan's work, "Running the Numbers: An American Self-Portrait". Jordan depicts, in a fascinating, repetitive, graphic form, the level of material waste in American life. Some of the representations form pictures, some are just vast "white noise" non-images that only reveal their content on close-up examination.
On the one hand, the work is visually arresting, quite beautiful, thought-provoking, and disturbing--all good qualities in art.
On the other hand, it's a work about waste that is, itself, really huge, requiring a lot of space and materials and light and stuff to show.
On balance, I think the art and its message wins. Be sure to check out the boobs.
