darkemeralds: Photo of Haystack Rock, Cannon Beach, Oregon, USA (Haystack)
[personal profile] darkemeralds
On the advice of my good friend Gayle, who cares about me and sometimes knows better than I do when I'm stressed out, I took a day off work today. The bastards, you see, were really starting to grind me down.

So I decided to drive down to the beach. Walking by the ocean always has a reconstructive effect on my spirits.

My phone went dead, so any idea of chatting the long drive away was out. My lost-wallet credit and debit card haven't been replaced yet (grrr) so I just had to hope nothing went wrong with me, my six dollars in cash and my signal-free phone.

I stopped at a convenience store on Highway 26 to check my phone again (still no go--everything worked except the cellular signal) and buy some Cheetos--a rare and always-regrettable indulgence, but a terrific stress reliever.

Then I went to Cannon Beach.

It had been stormy.

(One of dozens of whole trees washed up on the beach. This one was very red--western red cedar, maybe?)

It was windy.

(seriously? I need to start wearing some color)

I had the place pretty much to myself.

(that never happens at Cannon Beach!)

And it was, as always, beautiful.

(*points at magical big black monolith*)
(*is actually pretty impressed with this photo*)

Just as I approached Haystack Rock, like magic, my phone came back on, as if my little mini-vacation had rebooted my day and things were starting up again.

I spotted a rental house on my way back to my car that made me want to stay.

(Maybe one of these days...)

Then I came home and availed myself of the Bathtub of Resuscitation, and all in all, I'm almost beginning to have the feeling of starting to be de-stressed!

Thanks! Not too bad for phone-cam pix, I thought. Silly of me to leave town without my real camera, but the phone-cam with its overexposed skies and blur really lends a certain feeling to the beach. Who knew?

I really love that black rock image. Any plans to make it into an icon?

Very pretty and I'm very jealous. I've been wanting to go to the beach for months. I keep waiting for someoneto be available to go with me. Maybe I should just do what you did?

I also want some Tillamook white licorice ice cream.

*drool*

My parents lived for many years in Gearhart, so the Sunset Highway became a well-traveled route for me when I finally got a car. It's a luxury I'm extremely grateful for that I can still roll down to the coast for a walk on the sand (and maybe breakfast at the Pig & Pancake) two or three times a year. I almost always go alone--that seems to be part of its purpose.

I recommend it. White licorice ice cream doesn't sound like my cup of tea--can I have coffee-flavor instead?

Pretty places.

Glad to hear you're taking care of yourself. Now if only someone would take care of the bastards, eh?

If only.

That rental cottage? That's the one where I think N/S should stay when they sneak off together.

Beautifully enough, it's actually a four day weekend. I'm takin' Monday off too. The illegitimi were really getting carborundumish.

*flail!* I've been there! And walked on that beach! And now I can't find my pictures from that trip anywhere, and lo, I am sad about that.

Looks like a lovely day. Huzzah for you, knowing when to take a time out and recharge your batteries. ♥

You've been to Cannon Beach? Cool! It's nice, innit? I like it at all times of year.

Your icon is pretty. Greece? Itally? San Francisco?

My very first trip out there, I went to Cannon Beach. It's lovely! I have only been in the spring, though.

I have no idea where that is, although I've always assumed it was Italy or Greece. It was made my [livejournal.com profile] ladymargaret and I think I snagged it out of the minimalist_icons community.

That's the perfect way to de-stress.
Lovely pictures. That tree on the beach looks like an alien landscape.

The tree seemed very sad to me--and the redness of it looked like spraypaint at a distance, and wounds up close. The strangeness of the light is entirely owing to the dinky little camera in my phone, which apparently doesn't care for sky.
