Coming soon to my house...

He's still with his momcat. I get to bring him home on June 3.

Hee! Yeah, he really is.

But of course, how evil would a person have to be NOT to find a kitten at least a little bit cute?

Pretty evil. Or possibly just a person who favors dogs. Possibly both?

I really dislike dogs, but even I am not immune to the cuteness of puppies. So I assume the same is true in reverse for kitty-dislikers.

Hee. Probably true. I wouldn't know, I adore cats.

I'm getting a lot of that!

Slightly less "awww" will be litterboxes and other cat-related cleanup, which my memory has conveniently purged in the years since I last had a feline roommate. All you remember is the fuzzy, and the purring, and the happy-to-see-you-when-you-come-through-the-door. Memory is funny that way. Gets you into trouble as often as not!

But the brushing and the petting and the purring...awwww. Yay, kitties. I'm allergic, and my building doesn't allow them, so I'm doubly kitty-less. And thus able to forget all the less pleasant parts of owning one. *g*

Cute now. Well, always cute, but when he's fully grown he'll be a 20-lb behemoth. Really big feet on that little fuzzball.

Have you named him yet? The little pitter patter of Mal paws??

He's a "blue"--i.e., all gray--and I was hoping to find some Chinese phrase relating to grayness and/or catness that sounded pretty in an English context. Nothing other than "mao" really came up, and my neighbors already think I'm left-wing enough without apparently naming my cat after a Communist dictator.

So I'm looking out my window, wondering if this three-week rainstorm we've been having will ever stop, and musing on "Global Warming" as a good name for a cat, when "Monsoon" springs to mind.

It has a kind of South-Asian sound to it, but come to find out it's really Arabic in origin--mawsim. Means "season," and carries connotations of "winds of change" and "the appropriate season."

Everyone I've told the name to says, "So, what will you call him for a nickname? Mon? Or Soon?" I'm thinkin' "Mal." Hee!

Awww, now I want a huge ghostly kitten to loom over my landscape.
Actually, I adore him.

See, he's all gray, and I live in a really rainy climate. And I wasn't gonna be so trite as to name him Cloud or Stormy, though I was groping in that direction, but Firefly-ish Chinese terms for such things were all sounding kind of harsh and uncatlike, when I hit on "Monsoon," so then I found photos of monsoon rains sweeping in and...well, an hour or two later with the photo software, and voilĂ , looming catstorm.

I'm scared of dogs, with their slavering loyalty and stuff. Cats? Aloof, independent, supercilious and proud. That, I get.

I thought that too. Definitely not Jayne. Jayne is a great slavering, snarling dog's name.

Simon and Mal are just pussycats in comparison.

Actually, Simon can be just catty. Mal? More leopardish.

But you know how cats can go at it, ripping at each other's heads with their hind legs, clawing, snarling, puffing all up and dancing sideways in circles around each other? And then curling up together and purring and licking each other's ears?

Yeah--can't wait to bring him home.

Of course, then the cleanup begins. I've been blessedly free of cat hair and litterboxes for a couple of years.

On the other hand, I've also been without a purring pal. It's a good trade.

Yeah, me too. It's been a couple of years since my last one died. I swore I'd never put myself through that again, but I also never got rid of the kitty acoutrements. I guess the time has come again.

PS: Your icon is gorgeous, but I can't quite make it out--is it an angel over a planet? As an abstract composition, it's lovely.

You know, I'm not sure exactly what it's supposed to be! To me, it looks like an angel looking into the woods, with the sun coming through the trees and causing that round-ish light flare.

Why there would be an angel in the woods, I do not know. :)

And as long as we're talking icons, I just noticed that your emerald icon has an ouroboros around it. Cool!

Yeah! The Aes Sedai--the witchy women of power in Robert Jordan's Wheel of Time series--add the honorific "Sedai" to their given name after they've made the grade, and wear a gold ring in the form of the ouroboros. So, "emeraldsedai" seemed well summed up this way.

Hee. Langly's peering at me!

Ack! I would die if that cat were mine. I'm very much into kitty minimalism these days. My little hairless girl is just about the right speed for me. If I had to contend with all that fur, I would plotz.

The icon is by the mega-talented [livejournal.com profile] lanning.

You have a hairless kitty? Got pix?

Yeah, the fur of a Persian would be a bitch. My little guy is a Maine coon--with luck, he'll develop that coarse, heavy coat that doesn't shed much. But I've met his mom, and she's a silky one, so he could go either way.

I have the brush. I'm not afraid to use it.

Sadly not. He's quite a distance away. I hope to get over there once more between now and the big day when I bring him home.
