A couple of hours ago, my mother--a smart woman not prone to hysteria and not at all gullible--called me with an interesting item. A local news crawl across the Law and Order episode stated that people around the region were calling in to report "mysterious lights in the sky."

My nieces and I paused the Angel S2 episode we were watching to go outside and have a look. It's a brilliant night--stars galore, and any number of airplanes--but no mysterious lights.

Later, as I was walking them home down the block, I kept looking up, hoping to see mysterious lights. I said, "God, wouldn't that be cool? To see a UFO?"

"Yes," said niece number 1, the sophisticated 14-year-old. "Until the space aliens killed us all."

"Well, not that," I answered. "But it would be awesome to have something else to talk about besides George Bush."

"And Angel and Buffy," she said.

"Yeah. Think of the great conversations!"

Niece number two, the very down-to-earth 12-year-old, looked at me and said, "You're SO weird."

ETA: Okay, finally found something. From KGW, the local NBC affiliate, "Flaming object spotted in night sky: A fireball streaked through the night sky across the western half of the Pacific Northwest on Saturday, startling people all the way from southern Oregon to Seattle. Scientists said the fireball was probably a meteor, and that it likely disintegrated just before any fragments fell into the Pacific Ocean."
