Bento diary, tiffin edition

It was only a matter of time before I succumbed to the lure of lunch-boxes and bought another one.



Meet my new tiffin, India's answer to the bento box.



It's more capacious than my bento box, so I made whole-wheat pita bread to fit. Those are half and quarter pitas in the bottom tier, plus a nice blob of hummus, also home-made, and asparagus dividers.

How do you eat yogurt with chopsticks? Dip the blueberries in it. How do you eat cooked mung beans with chopsticks? Very slowly. (I couldn't locate my spoon!)

The box, when stacked and locked down, isn't watertight, but you could transport soup in it if you kept it upright. The round shape and larger capacity open up some possibilities for less dense food, like bread. I sense some Indian cookery coming on.

That looks so beautiful. There used to be an Indian restaurant in Bristol where you could buy your own tiffins. Whenever you wanted a takeaway, you just took the tiffin to the restaurant and they filled it with scrummy thali at a cheaper price than standard meal. Wish we had a place like that around here.

Wow, that is very cool. It seems almost revolutionary and anti-Public-Health-Regulation or something, to imagine restaurants doing that today.

And yet, every coffee place in town will gladly fill my own thermal cup. Hmm...

I think it's time to revive this idea.
