I never enjoy my town more than when lovely visitors come and seem to appreciate the place.

[personal profile] ranunculus and her friend D are visiting just outside of town for a few days, and made their way downtown (after a wine-country tour, no less!) to dine with me at Brasserie Montmartre. They live in San Francisco, so they know cities and restaurants, and they were kind enough to say that if for some reason they had to leave home, Portland would be their next choice.

So I'm all puffed up, more than usual, about My Little Town.

We had lovely French bistro food (including two different versions of the Bra's fabulous frites--one in duck fat, one in pork fat), Scotch whisky, Oregon wine, and loads of laughs and conversation. And lavender crème brûlée for dessert.

I finally saw them to the streetcar station not long before 9:00--the hours flew by.

Thank you, [personal profile] ranunculus and D. It was a fine evening.

I knew I'd need some down time once the fun and excitement of [personal profile] kis and Mr Kis's visit was over, so I booked an extra week of vacation--five completely blank days on my calendar.

After a couple of nights of super-excessive sleeping and a couple of days of restorative do-nothing puttering-about-the-house, a strange thing happened: I started writing and couldn't stop.

People who write fast and fluently will probably not think much of this: to my writingest friends, a free day equals a day of actual writing, as far as I can tell--I can't think how else they get so much written. To me it usually equals a day of hair-pulling. I start, I stop, I check my email, I struggle over a sentence or a plot point till I can't struggle no more, then I take a break, and repeat the process, and that's why Restraint will be two years old in October.

But yesterday! Wow. I sat down at 11:00 a.m. and basically stood up at 11:00 p.m., and the only thing I can remember doing all day is writing. I finished chapter 38 and sent it off to my still-traveling beta, and without a pause, I opened a new document and started chapter 39.

I wish I could bottle whatever it was that made that happen.

[personal profile] kis and Mr Kis are off in a red rental car on their adventure across the American West, and I've moved back into my house after a week of delights.

With the exception of conquering a glaciated volcanic peak, which Mr Kis and my sister did last Thursday, it was a mild-mannered week. We got to the coast, managed two visits to Powell's Books, ate at a couple of Portland's nicest restaurants, and saw the R. Crumb exhibit at the Portland Art Museum.

There was a good deal of sitting outdoors over wine, food, beer and conversation, especially since the weather turned gorgeous on Saturday. My sis and I gave a party Saturday night at her house, and had a nice crowd of people and a lot of laughter (and good food!).

From my 14 year old nephew to my 80 year old mom, [personal profile] kis and Mr Kis seemed to enjoy meeting and spending time with everyone, and it was entirely mutual.

Last night at Lucca, when the waiter learned that our friends were from Scotland, he asked how we knew each other. Mr Kis pointed to [personal profile] kis and me and said, "They met on the internet."

What a wonderful world.

I'll be taking [personal profile] kis and Mr Kis to their rental car first thing tomorrow morning so that they can be off on the second half of their American adventure, and that will end a week in which long anticipation, high expectations, and reality converged better than anything I've ever experienced.

Put another way, I've been imagining their visit for ages, it was fabulous in my imagination, and the reality has been even better than than I'd hoped.

Here's a little picture from our day at the coast:

Whew! A quick fly-by post to say that [personal profile] kis, Mr Kis, and I are having a fantastic time. We did downtown Portland (Powell's Books, the Church of Elvis, the Armory, some street food, and a quick look-in at the World's Tallest Basement, aka my place of employment) on Wednesday.

Mr Kis and my sister climbed Mt St Helens yesterday (all the way to the top!) while [personal profile] kis and I met with [personal profile] despina_moon and had an afternoon of fannish discussion, food, and beer while wandering around Mississippi Avenue.

Today, my mom and I introduced [personal profile] kis and Mr Kis to the Pacific Ocean at Cannon Beach. The weather's been less than stellar, but neither cold nor rainy (and, happily for all of us, not hot)--pleasant enough for walking around and sight-seeing.

So far the raccoons, which generally plague me but which Mr Kis is eager to see in person, have not obliged us with an appearance. Otherwise, things have been lovely and we're having a great time.

After WEEKS of really lovely weather, today--when [personal profile] kis and Mr Kis are due to arrive, the sky opened up and started pouring rain.

I leave for the airport in a couple of hours, and after rushing around for the past couple of days to make sure everything's in place, I'm just kind of sitting here, listening to it rain and killing time (and eating the gluten-free peanut butter oatmeal chocolate chip cookies I baked for the Kises and trying not to mess up the perfectly-clean kitchen).

I guess I could cart my suitcase and pillow over to my sister's house (i.e., move out), but it's all rainy out there.

So, White Collar season finale and maybe one more cookie. Then airport!

Whew! Just came home from the grocery store on Eleanor O with all three baskets filled, the most stuff I've ever carted by bike: lots of goodies to share with [personal profile] kis and Mr Kis over the coming week.

My front yard has been suitably barbered, the house is as tidy as it's gonna get, and I've painted my last for a while. There's a fresh set of cotton sheets, the duvet cover is on the clothesline being breezed, and I have a stack of little post-it notes ready to affix to cupboards and drawers so that my guests know where to find things, notably the tea.

I've emptied out a couple of drawers in the bedroom, set up a clothes rack, and fluffed up the pillows. I think Hotel Dark Em is ready for guests!

It's been true all my life and I don't see it changing at this late stage: I'll accomplish things for a deadline or for someone else that I'll let go for years when I'm my only audience.

[personal profile] kis has several times expressed a concern that I'm overdoing the home improvement for their visit (in three days! Eeeeee!!!), but it's a fantastic motivator, and I'm not doing anything that didn't desperately need doing.

It's the back end of a perfectly splendid September Saturday, and I'm happily tired (and prophylactically dosed on ibuprofen), having sawed, spackled, chiseled, pounded, painted and pruned things that have been left undone for as much as ten years. Several of them seemed too difficult or too complex for me to tackle, but with the Magic of External Motivation® I suddenly found simple, obvious solutions.

It's like getting a new house! I hardly know the place.

Eeeee! After many months of waiting and anticipating, the day of [personal profile] kis's arrival in Stumptown is almost upon me.

Way back last winter, [personal profile] kis wrote to inquire whether it would be convenient for me if she and Mr Kis made a short side trip to Portland during a US visit centered principally around Yellowstone National Park.

I think they probably heard the squee all the way in Scotland, but I wrote back anyway and said yes, yes, and hell yes, and said they could have my house and I would move across the street to my sister's house and...

Well, we've been planning ever since and they'll be here on Tuesday night!

*scurries off to do a few more little things*

Squee!

I risk talking out of class but I can't stand the excitement. So I'm disclosing here that one of my bestest fandom friends in the whole wide world, who lives a very long ways away, is COMING TO VISIT ME IN SEPTEMBER.

She and her husband are making a trans-oceanic trip to see some American stuff, including my fair city, some of its environs (and moi), and we are going to have a blast!

*runs off planning madly*
